What Are Smart Drugs?

The short explanation is – Smart Drugs are medications used for improving cognitive functions in healthy human beings. The long explanation is the entirety of this article. Keep reading to know more.

Smart Drugs are also called Nootropics. This word and usage of formulaic synthetic medication to improve function of the ‘brain’, is new to allopathic medicine but the concept of cognitive improvement in normal human beings is not. In fact, cognitive medication has been in use in Chinese and Indian medicines for centuries.

Western medicine is just beginning to take note of the enhancing effects of drugs on cognitive behavior of people. The premise of ‘becoming smarter’ by using medicines does not sit well with the established norms of allopathy, which allow medicines only to ‘cure or alleviate’ an existing medical condition. There is, however, no denying that smart drugs do indeed increase the mental, sensory and perceptive abilities in human beings. View More What Are Smart Drugs?

How Do Nootropic Supplements Work?

A number of nootropic supplements are available in the markets. There are different categories available for the same. Every category has a different mechanism of action, which is why the answer to the question about how nootropic supplements work cannot be straightforward.

In order to attain a better understanding regarding the working of nootropic supplements and their role in enhancing memory and cognitive behavior, you need to acquire a better understanding of the mechanism and neurotransmitters that are involved in the normal functioning of the brain and are responsible for memory and other related functions.

How Do Nootropic Supplements Work?

Neurotransmitters basically refer to chemicals that transmit nerve signals and impulses from one nerve cell to another.

You can think of them as chemical messengers. There are two types of neurotransmitters present: excitatory (which transmit a message) and inhibitory (which are responsible for preventing a message from being received).

The messages received by the neurotransmitters decide the receptors with which the neurotransmitters are supposed to synapse. The neurotransmitters along with the receptors constitute a system for normal functioning.

The nootropic supplements target this system and endeavor to increase its efficiency so as to improve the cognitive function of the brain. Let us not take a look at some of the systems that are targeted by these supplements.

Acetylcholine

This is the neurotransmitter that can be deemed as the driving force behind the cholinergic system. Acetylcholine plays a pivotal role in many important processes. These include the likes of learning, memory, focus, decision making, and sensory perception.

There are many nootropics supplements that are actually precursors of acetylcholine and serve to enhance the functions that are performed by the neurotransmitter. However, it is often seen that the precursors of acetylcholine are not sufficient to provide you with favorable results, which is why they are often used with agonists to attain a synergistic effect.

Glutamate

Glutamate is the neurotransmitter that is present in the brain in the highest concentration. It has a role to play in maintaining the health of the brain and facilitates processes such as learning and memory. There are a number of nootropic supplements that serve to stimulate the receptors of this neurotransmitter.

Nootropic supplement pills

Dopamine and serotonin

These two neurotransmitters are usually not the primary targets of nootropics supplements as they mainly deal with feelings of pleasure and happiness. However, they do have a certain effect on the overall effectiveness of the supplements.

Supplements that stimulate the production of dopamine can be addictive, which is why it is better to refrain from making use of them on a daily basis.

The basic effect

If you are looking to understand how the nootropic supplements work, you should endeavor to find out more about these five neurotransmitters, namely acetylcholine, glutamate, GABA, dopamine, and serotonin. They have a huge role to play in the mechanism via which nootropics work.

Neurotransmitters are chemicals that form the source of communication between the different parts of the brain. Due to these chemicals, your brain is able to perform various cognitive activities.

These include the likes of your learning process, memorizing things, processing, calculating, reasoning, imagination, creativity, focus, feeling and perception. The synapses formed via the neurons due to these chemicals are responsible for all these functions. The nootropic supplements basically serve to optimize these connections, thereby ensuring that the cognitive abilities of the person are improved.

There remains a bit of a controversy surrounding these supplements as studies continue to be conducted with regards to their efficacy. There are many supplements whose exact mechanism of action is not known to date.

Conclusion

So do nootropic supplements work? The answer is yes, it all depends on what you are trying to achieve, believe it or not there are a variety of nootropic supplements that work differently, for example, Nootropics like NooCube would be more suited for students or people suffering from memory retention problems. If you are into sports or bodybuilding there are actually Nootropics such as Muscletronic which helps improve mental focus, strength, and motivation is essential for better athletic performance and bodybuilding.

Meldonium was invented in the mid-1970’s by the Latvian SSR Academy of Sciences by Ivars Kalvins, a Soviet and Latvian chemist. Its primary use was to treat ischemia, which causes a restriction to the blood supply to different tissues in  the body, when this happens it causes a shortage of oxygen and glucose needed for cellular metabolism to keep tissue alive and healthy. People affected by ischemia may suffer from vasoconstriction, embolism, and thrombosis.

Benefits of Meldonium and Side Effects

Meldonium is very popular in Eastern Europe and is sold over the counter without a prescription, people who purchase the drug use it as a nootropic, it has also been found to be very effective at increasing cognitive function, while improving mental alertness and focus. Meldonium is also used to treat angina and myocardial infarction.

  • Meldonium was originally created as an alternative growth promoter for livestock and poultry
  • It takes 4-6 weeks to see the full benefits of meldonium
  • Meldonium is sold in Russia over the counter in tablet and vials
  • A prescription may be required in some parts of Eastern Europe
  • Meldonium was once used by Russian troops as a stamina enhancer
  • The FDA has not approved the drug for sale in the US

What are the benefits of meldonium

There is currently not a lot of information on what all the potential benefits of meldonium are, what we do know is that it improves blood and oxygen flow in the body which that alone could help athletic ability, especially people who are in excellent physical condition, not only does it enhance physical performance, it is also used as a mood enhancer and nootropic for improved cognitive function and thinking.

Meldonium side effects

Some of the side effects documented when using meldonium include: irregular heartbeat (tachycardia), low blood pressure, irregular skin conditions, and possible allergic reaction. It is also recommended that medonium not be used by pregnant or lactating mothers.

Dosage

Anyone considering using meldonium should first consult their doctor, the recommended dosage for an average adult is 250mg 2-4 times per day. Athletes who have used meldonium have often stacked it with other sports enhancing drugs.

Conclusion

There is not a lot of information on meldonium, but due to the recent scandal involving Maria Sharapova, I’m sure as time goes by there will be more interest and information on the benefits of its use, not only as a sports enhancing drug but also as a powerful nootropic.

Muscletronic acts as a powerful fat burner

Anyone who trains is not only doing it to increase lean muscle but to also burn fat, Muscletronic acts as a powerful fat burner, and it contains a hefty dose of Caffeine to help keep energy levels high and maintain mental focus.

Please note: People who are sensitive to caffeine or are taking other stimulants should not take Muscletronic

My personal  experience with Muscletronic

The directions for taking Muscletronic are two capsules 30-45 minutes before you train,  however, if you train late at night I would not recommend it, especially if you are going straight home to bed because they do give you a huge boost in energy, so my recommendation is, “do not” take MuscleTronic within 5 hours of your bedtime, if you do you will not sleep.

Taking Muscletronic as directed before my workout gave me a total burst of energy, the one thing I noticed the most was not crapping out in the middle of my training, I easily managed 40 minutes of cardio and then off to the weights, the first day I had the energy to spare and that was on leg day. I was easily able to move a lot of heavy weight with no fatigue (incredible).

Muscletronic recommended dosage

On non-training days – take 2 capsules after waking up

On training days – take 2 capsules 30-45 minutes before your workout

After the first 5 days:

On non-training days – take 2 capsules after you wake up and 2 capsules with lunch

On training days – take 2 capsules after you wake up and 2 capsules 30-45 minutes before starting your training session

Stacking Muscletronic with other supplements

You don’t have to worry about stacking Muscletronic with other supplements, during my recommended cycle I still took my Creatine and whey protein with no issues whatsoever however for obvious reasons I would not recommend taking it with other stimulants or fat burners.

Conclusion

To be honest my first thought before purchasing Muscletronic nootropic was that I was totally unsure if it would work, I was very skeptical  about how a simple Nootropic could help me improve my lifts, let alone improve focus, but it does, it’s like a fat burner on steroids, it not only burns fat  it also improve strength and reduces fatigue which I have always struggled with in the middle of my training.

Ritalin and the Potential Side Effects

Ritalin has been prescribed as a nootropic but it has also been considered poor man’s cocaine, below we will discuss Ritalin and the potential side effects.

Ritalin (Methylphenidate) has been prescribed by doctors for decades, since 1960 Ritalin has been prescribed to treat functional behavior,  it has also been used in the treatment of ADHD and narcolepsy. Most studies claim there are no real side effects from using the drug, however, it has been called poor man’s cocaine because if its stimulating effects, it is often chopped up and snorted like cocaine producing similar effects.

Ritalin and the Potential Side Effects

Is Ritalin bad?

While doctors say that if Ritalin is used properly the side effects are minimal, yet the statistics do show that it can cause death, people who use Ritalin in excess may become addicted. Ritalin is easily obtainable in schools costing around $1.00 per pill and up to $20.00 per pill on the black market. If you do a search on the statistics of the  side effects of Ritalin use most of them date back to 2006 but there is very little current information. View More Ritalin and the Potential Side Effects
